I’m Just Not A Morning Person.
Some people are morning people. They get up before the sun rises and they go for a run around the neighborhood, scaring the bird trying to get the first worm. They get back home for breakfast and have a shower. Then they catch up on all their newspaper reading. and they toddle off to work, arriving 20 minutes early.
I don’t do mornings. The alarm clock is like the sword of damacles hanging over my slumber. It’s strident clamour heralds the death of my dreams and the destruction of the land of Nod. I hit the sleep button and scrape another few minutes of sleep from the desolation of another workday. The inevitable moment arrives: if I delay one more minute I will be seriously, noticeably, late for work. After chucking on some mismatching clothes, (because my eyes are still stuck shut with sleep) I stumble off to work, eventually waking up about an hour after getting there.
Morning people don’t believe in the existence of non-morning people. They think we are either mad or lazy liars. But go and pick up a morning person for a call out at 7pm and then the boot is on the other foot. They yawn expansively as they get in the car, they mutter incoherent sentences, and only your terrible driving keeps them from sleeping for the remainder of the 3 hour trip. They look at you in awe as you drive on through the night, and cannot believe that your are still wide awake and alert at 2 in the morning. they think you are some kind of freak, but they are impressed none the less.
Yup, we night people can keep going as long as we have to. We don’t do mornings, but we do do nights. Moring people doodoo nights! When the world is sleeping, we go on working, quietly acheiving and prevailing where others would fall down and sleep. We are the epitome of the long life battery, as we keep on keeping on through long nights.
Night people are often unseen, like the long haul train driver, the night flight airline pilot, the technician on a call out, the night watchman. But don’t ask us to get up early. That is being cruel. Our bodies are not designed for early morning activity. A morning run would kill us, and doing anything financial before 9am would be a fast road to bankruptcy. Writing a birthday card would lose a friend and create an enemy!
So if you’re a morning person, spare a thought for your yawning colleague. He’s not lazy. He’s not crazy. He’s just not in the right time zone.

I always said I was a morning person because I’d stay up till 5 in the morning
I really surprised myself when I started becoming a morning person because of work obligations.
Sometimes you really have to change your lifestyle to avoid being sleepy and less productive at work

I’m with you bro!

I used to be exactly what you describe! People had to drag me out of bed kicking and screaming! But things change, and I found myself to become more productive during mornings. Somehow… It changed and I suddenly became a morning person. I guess loving the Job also helps!

Bakkouz, You make it sound like something built into your DNA. And I disagree. Because unless I happen to have both night and morning genes, your theory does not apply to me.
Through out my adult life, I would alternate between 6am mornings and 6am nights. Sometimes within the same week.
One thing I could see with reasonable clarity, people who stick with early morning routine, are more disciplined and more productive and as a result, somehow end up with more money.

Morning persons and night persons…
I am both. And neither.
It depends on the time of year, the place, my daily routine, and most of all my mood.
Sometimes I can’t do mornings at all. I function somehow, on autopilot. I am not very grumpy, but I cannot think! In those times I am glad that I don’t drive.
Weeks go by, and I find myself yawning at 9 PM, and being fully awake at 6 AM, only to be unable to sleep before 2 AM a week later!
Sometimes I wake up early with the birds, singing while preparing breakfast, and sometimes I go to sleep at 10 PM and find it extremly difficult to function before 10 AM the next day!
At other times (especially in Ramadan) I have no problem to work in the morning after a night without sleep at all. But there are times where I can’t do the most basic things without at least 8 hours of sleep per day.
I only wish I could control it and sleep less or more, be a night or a morning person at will, not by chance.

So true - actually tons of thoughts ought to go out to the night people - many of my friends are some of you. I ofcourse don’t get it. I LOVE mornings. I devour them. Every single one, for years and for as long as my memory goes back. In that moment of self analysis, it’s the mornings that have helped keep it together. But I know the night people exist and you’re amazing. It blows me away all the time!
May the force be with you.

Yeah, I’m not a morning person either. As Kinzi said, now that I’m a Mom, I have to get up and take the kids to school. So, I’m up at 6 every morning, dragging my self out of bed wishing there were 3 more hours to sleep. But, up I am. And driving (a scary thought that!).
I do think that each person’s body has a natural preference. Like yours, mine isn’t morning. It’s not necessarily late nights, but more in the middle. Up at 9 in bed by 1,that sort of thing. Glad to finally see a post I can read :).

Another one here for the “useless in the mornings” club. I’m lucky enough to be able to work from home, with the rest of my colleagues behind me on another time zone. Which means the more intense work does not begin until well after I am up, awake, and fully functioning.
Though I did manage to significantly improve my morning and waking experience - which means much less time shuffling around like a zombie - with one of those dawn simulator alarm clocks (links to my blog post about it).

I am sooo not a morning person. But i refuse to drink coffee like my wife does. So it takes a long time for me to get going. But I can crank it out at night.

Heh I am definitely NOT a morning person
I try to extend my sleep by as MANY minutes as possible before it’s necessary to go to work.
