XO Laptop: A Green Miracle Of Energy Efficiency.
The OLPC laptop, known as XO or the $100 laptop, is a feat of energy efficient engineering, consuming just 2W of energy - which makes it able to be powered through solar cells or hand cranks. In the video below, Mary Lou Jepsen, passionate engineer and former Chief Technology Operator of One Laptop Per Child, illustrates how the XO laptop is a new model for energy-efficient electronics, and inspiration to look at new ways of powering our devices.

Ah, yes, I remember posting about that some time ago. One great idea, the XO laptop, and will help alot of children in poor countries.
I remember hearing about how you could pay $200, and send one laptop to a child in Africa, and get the other one for you. I will try to do more research later on.

Wow! That’s is SO awesome. Where can I get one (and how much import duty am I going to have to pay)? I think we need a laptops across Jordan program to bring this to those without the means to buy laptops. I mean, the ability to charge with solar power alone is worth huge sums of money in this place of blue skies and exhorbitant energy prices.

Sweet laptop, looks kinda weird but im sure they will have huge advancments to this technology in the near future.

If your looking for something similar you could look at the Asus eee Pc or the Cloudbook. Neither use solar power to charge up, but are both very efficient dinky laptops. Neither have the weird styling either ;) It seems ultra cheap laptops are becoming the new trend, which can only help developing countries.
It will be a glorious day when we can get laptops to run of solar cells just like calculators do.

I’ve not heard any more about this lately. Is it still moving forward? The idea of an energy efficient, low cost computer is surely something positive for students in all corners of the world.

Technology NEEDS to move in this direction. Were on our way but it’s still more cost effective to go with a 2-3 year old laptop. I personally find mine:
