I’m not too fond of anything apple.
Since the original Macintosh PC, they used proprietary hardware, such that even the screws on the case were designed to only be openable with a special screwdriver. What they were trying to prevent through this xenophobia is partly what allowed the IBM compatible PCs to take over most of the PC market. To their favor their new pc’s do look “pretty” if nothing else, and they probably did it before anyone else. What is it with pc manufacturers all making everything in beige? Still no reason to get a MAC considering how hard it is to find compatible software for it. If you must have a good looking PC, I like alienware’s saucer silver with blue lights myself !
Then came the gadget which saved Apple from bankruptcy, the mighty ipod. Known the world over for being really cute loking. On closer scrutiny with multiple incarnations of the ipod/ ipod-mini / ipod-shuffle, and God help us all the Itunes software, they just don’t measure up to all the hype.
- overpriced, offering less bang (capacity/features) for the buck
- The Itunes software is horrible, the firmware doesn’t allow copying music/files to the ipod directly from windows explorer (ala flash mode) without instaling anything, on installing / upgrading the firmware it will delete all music currently on the ipod, I’ve seen this happen to both my boss and my brother (both very intelligent and technical electrical engineers).
I haven’t tried the i-phone yet, but I’m willing to bet apple continued the trend of overpriced, under-featured, but cute looking.

Hani, I agree that apple’s products are a bit over priced but they are good products, hardware wise that is (not familiar with any of their software). Apple are all about design. they have a pretty loyal fan base and they try hard to keep them satisfied with their shiny sleek devices :)

And to prove that, I’d like to say that Hani’s comment on your post is very far off the mark.
In my company we used to have a PC, Mac mix. We will always retain a mixed platform environment.
But seriusly.. and without too much Apple bias on my part, the overall cost of ownership and the longevity of Apple’s products is superior.
When people say that Apple is all about the “design”, they seem to treat the word design as ’shiny look’. Nothing can be further from the truth. Apple’s efforts in interface design (designing how humans can interact with product in better way) is what set Apple apart.
The other thing about Apple is that it is a company that still has a ’soul’. This is something many people respond too because they feel a certain care for details and a care for how human use the stuff.
The ‘overpriced’ accusation is also pretty baseless. Go compare features of an Apple laptop and a similar one from say Toshiba. The prices (in the US at least) are quite close.
The new large screen imacs are also reasonably priced.
Apple’s market-share in the PC market (forget the iPod and iPhone) is actually growing fast. Open source developers and other geeks are adopting Macs. THese are people who are not simply impressed by good looks.
And apart from all the above, Apple has Steve Jobs, probably the most charismatic tech CEO on the planet, who, undoubtedly plays a big part in rallying the faithful.
Many lessons to learn from this amazing company.

Its funny how my sister used that same phrase when discussing Apple. “Apple is all about design” !
Not having ever owned a MAC, I won’t disagree with you about the TCO, and I’ve seen the UI, and we all know MS tried to steal some of that in vista.
Software-wise though open-source just doesn’t cut it. I mean I’ll use it when its the best alternative (eg. I use firefox for everything except internet banking where I have to use IE), but normally it isn’t. eg. I’ve tried openoffice, it just doesn’t measure up to office 2007 which by the way is the first time I’ve seen MS pays so much attention to UI.
